When an engine such as a gasoline engine or the like is used as a power source for machinery, the engine is normally controlled by controlling fuel injection and ignition timing so that an engine speed becomes a predetermined value.
The fuel injection and the ignition timing are controlled by using pulse width modulated signals generated by an engine speed sensor which generates a reference rotational speed signal indicative of a predetermined engine speed, for instance, the number of engine revolutions. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately set the engine speed at which the number of revolutions is to be referred to.
That is, since the number of engine revolutions is determined by the load on the engine, a mechanical governor which detects a difference between the speed of the crankshaft and the engine speed is used to accurately set the engine speed.
Therefore, the speed of the engine changes when the load on the engine changes, so that it is necessary to set the reference engine speed at a value within the range of the variation in the number of engine revolutions, i.e., a range of 0 to an engine speed at which the engine is loaded to an over-revolution state.
The reference engine speed is set by adjusting the position of a rack of the mechanical governor, which is operated in response to the engine speed, to make the number of revolutions of the engine a predetermined speed when the position of the rack is adjusted to the reference engine speed.
Thus, when the number of engine revolutions is set at a predetermined value, it is necessary to accurately set the position of the rack of the mechanical governor to the reference engine speed.
The reference engine speed is set when the engine is placed in a cold condition. It is not possible to set the reference engine speed while the engine is hot or when the temperature of the engine is low. Therefore, the reference engine speed is set while the engine is placed in a cold condition.
